What to expect at the 14th Annual Melvin J. Fisher Hills and Hollows Half Marathon, 5K Event? The event should be exciting and the best ever! Many talented runners are coming from across the nation attempting to take home the Hills and Hollows Half Marathon, 5K Title, creating high expectations for an atmosphere of fast times, top runners along with the possibility of new course records being established. Your friends and neighbors will be participating in this family friendly event also. Join us for a morning of fun!


Finisher Medals? Finisher medals will be given to all Half Marathon, 5K Race Finishers.

Will there be Awards? Yes. Awards will be given to the top 3 athletes in each event and age division, male and female. Overall Awards, followed by Masters (40-49); Grand Masters (50-59); Seniors (60-69). Age Division Awards start at 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64,

65-69, 70+. There will be no duplication of awards in Open or Age Divisions.

There will be ‘No Age Ban Jumping’. (Example: If you are 52 years old and if you finished ahead of a runner who is 48 years old and you both finished in the top 3 of your age division.) You will be given an award as a Grand Master Award. No Awards, Medals or Times will be given for the Fun Walk.

Will there be an awards ceremony? Yes. Each race will have a short awards ceremony where Open and Age Division winners are recognized. There are over 200 awards given out during this one day event.

What are the Special Awards? If you are an Emergency Response Personnel (Firefighters, EMT, Paramedics or Police Officers) and or Active / Retired Military Personnel you qualify for the Special Awards. Please include your information when you register for the event. The first ERP and Military person to complete the 5K / Half Marathon is given this award in each event. These awards are not gender specific.

All Group Registrations must be done as a group at the same time and in the same event and must be completed online or mailed in together with payment in order to receive the group price. Paper Registration, entry forms must be completely, waiver signed and submitted to Hills and Hollows RRCA, PO Box 222, Valmeyer, IL 62295. DO NOT leave at the village Hall or Firehouse. Is there a time limit for the Half Marathon? The Half Marathon course is open for 3 hours and 30 minutes beginning at 7:30 a.m. and will close at 11:00 a.m.

Where can I find a map of the course? On our website labeled, ‘The Race’ dropdown to Race Course Map. Watch a video of the Half Marathon Course by clicking on the YouTube tab on the left side of our website.

Will there be a health & fitness expo? No. We will have some vendors to provide sport massages post-race. When is Packet Pickup? Friday September 21, 11:30 a.m. – 6: p.m. Saturday September 22, 6:00 – 7:00 a.m. Where is packet pick up? Valmeyer Firehouse, 626 South Meyer, Valmeyer, IL 62295.

Will I receive a T-shirt? Everyone that registers prior to September 1st will receive a T-shirt. Late registrations after September 1st are Not Guaranteed a T-shirt included runners, walkers, volunteers, sponsors and donors.

Will late registrations be taken at the Packet Pickup? Yes. You can register for the Half-Marathon, 5K Race or 5K Fun Walk at the Packet Pickup Friday or Saturday morning at the Firehouse provided the events are not already full and sold out.

Will there be Same Day Packet Picket-up? Yes. You may pick up your packet Saturday 6:00-7:00 am at the Firehouse. However, we request that you pick up your packet at the Firehouse on Friday if you are able.

What do I need to bring with me to pick up my packet? Bring your Photo ID (must match what you printed on your race registration).

Will I be allowed to change races at the Packet pick-up on FRIDAY or SATURDAY? NO!

What is the last date to change races? NO CHANGES WILL BE MADE AFTER SEPTERMBER 15TH.

A $10 change fee will be charged if changing races and must be completed prior to September 16th.

Where should I park for the Race? ABSOLUTELY NO PARKING AT THE FIREHOUSE Please comply with the instructions of those directing vehicular traffic. Parking will be near the Start. Normally within just a few blocks of the start. No parking on the street near the Start / Finish area.

Will there be Medical Personnel? Yes. There will be medical personnel at the start/finish line. There will be First Responders & EMT’s traveling the course, as well 12 aid stations where medical personnel can be summoned via cellphone.

If you have any serious allergies, (e.g. bee stings), or have medical conditions which could affect your treatment from medical personnel, you should carry this information with you during the race.

Emergency Contact Information. Everyone should print any allergies or health conditions and their emergency contact person’s name and phone number on the back of your race number with a permanent marker. These will be available at packet pick-up. Accidents do occur.

Will there be chip timing? Yes! Your timing device will be attached to your Bib Number. Chip Timing will be provided by Final Lap Race Management

Will there be aid stations on the course? Yes. Aid Stations will be approximately every mile. All Aid Stations will have water & Gatorade. Free food and drinks will be served at the finish line in buffet style.

Will there be portable toilets on the course? Yes. Portable Toilets will be at the start and at miles 4, 7, 11 and again in the Stat/Finish area at the Firehouse.

Can I leave items with volunteers along the course? No. Volunteers will not accept items. If you leave something at an Aid Station or along the course you do so at your own risk.

Will the course be closed to traffic? No. All of the race course is on “Open to Traffic. Yield to all vehicles especially Emergency Response Vehicles immediately, they may be responding to help a friend. We don’t want anyone hurt or injured. Farmers will be harvesting their crops that feed the world. Please be polite to everyone.

Will Headphones or ear buds be allowed on the course? Using headphones is strongly discouraged! If a runner chooses to use them, please use only one side so you will be aware of traffic. Use of headphones is at the runner’s own risk!

Will there be course photos? Yes. Photos will be taken throughout the course and at the finish line and posted on the www.HillsandHollows.net and on our Hills and Hollows RRCA Facebook page.

What is your refund policy? No refunds will be issued.

What is your deferral policy? No deferrals (“carry-overs” or “transfers”) of entry to future years are permitted.

Race Weather & Climate, Located in the southwestern corner of the state, in Illinois’ westernmost bend of the Mississippi River just across the border from Missouri, the small town of Valmeyer typically sees mild to moderately warm weather in early fall, with the occasional shower. On the day of the race, the average low is 55°F and the average high is 77°F.

Where will I find the race results? Live race results will be posted during the event. Live text message and email race results notifications provided by Final Lap Race Management. Results will be posted on www.HillsandHollows.net and http://www.finallapracing.com/raceresults.html.

Where is a good spot for my family members to watch me on the course? There are several places; Start/ Finish in Valmeyer will be the BEST location. In the older part of Village of Valmeyer (flooded in 1993) near Mile 11 has an area and would be a good place to watch and cheer without getting on the race course. The Fire

Department parking lot and areas on both sides of the Finish will be available to foot traffic only. Spectators should not park in the street if it is on the course. Please help keep the course clear for runners and walkers.

What should spectators bring with them? You may want to bring sunscreen, lawn chairs, blankets, cowbells, horns, clapping noise-makers, personal signs to support your runner. This is a very spectator friendly event.

Please bring out your family and friends in support of the runners and the community.

Donations? You may make donations anytime of the year to Hills and Hollows RRCA, via our website or mail a check to Hills and Hollows RRCA, PO Box 222, Valmeyer, IL 62295. We are a Non-For-Profit, registered with the IRS, as a 501©3 organization. Your donations are tax deductible. We have donated Thousands of Dollars to support BackStoppers, Valmeyer Active Fireman’s Association and the Maeystown Volunteer Fire Department. This year’s theme is SUPPORT THE THIN RED LINE.
